Playback problem, yeah, I'm a newbie

Audacity works fine on my old IBM Thinkpad laptop with Windows XP, but my desktop which is newer, faster, better is running Ubuntu 9, and I can't get the playback to work right. I've completely uninstalled Audacity and then reinstalled it (Synaptic Package Manager) and it still doesn't work right. I can open an mp3, and when I hit "Play", it sounds all scratchy and only goes a few seconds and gets hung up. I've tried changing preferences, latency, and playback devices and nothing works.

Hello Linux user,

I wish I could help. I've never hard the guts to switch over to Linux, although that seems like a nice idea. I can't help you, but maybe if someone else jumps on this I can create a Linux forum.

Quite obviously you are using Ubuntu 9.04. Unfortunately there have been legal issues as far as some drivers are concerned (mainly Intel) and some soundcards are not supported under 9.04. My onboard soundcard does not work properly either but Linux does pick up my interface so Im lucky there.
You can go check on Ubuntu forums for more information on how to get it working but I have tried countless times with no success.

Thanks Fortyseven. Uh, would the Lone Ranger maybe just buy a different soundcard? Seems that might be my best bet. I'll see if it supports Creative Audigy.

I would first try configuring linux to use the soundcard you already have before spending more money.
