Question Newbie needs help transfering LP's

I'm a complete newbie with audacity and this forum,
I want to transfer my LP's to my computer but hit a snag getting audacity to record the music.
I have a turntable connected to an amp and rca leads from the tape out on the amp to the line in (blue socket) on the motherboards onboard sound.
In sound manager (realtek audio) Audio I/O the line in is ticked and on the mixer tab (Record) its set on Reatek HDA Primary Input.
I can't find anything else in control panels sound manager.
Are there settings in Audacity that need to be changed?
any help would be greatly appreciated

Can you record anything with audacity?

Can you record LPs with windoze software?

Have you recorded anything before at all on this PC?

Did you read teh article at the audacity site on copying LPs?

There should be some sort of AUDIO setup in your application that you should double check.

I often do make connections to the wrong jacks, so that does happen for some people : )

I finaly got sound from the turntable to the computer by buying a phono pre-amp, I had a look at some troubleshooting guides and the problem seems to be on the mixer toolbar both the playback and recording controls work but the control to set the recording device is greyed out http://audacity.sourceforge.net/onli...lbar_mixer.png
Also in recording control in control panel sounds and audio devices cd volume, line volume and mic volume are greyed out

A pre-amp is only needed for equalized playback. You don't need it to record.

You have to get your soundcard recording at the operating system level FIRST !!
