Mixing Audio At Home.....Audacity???

I have a friend who wishes to mix 5 tracks into one(and I want to learn how to also). They are presently each 40 minutes long and in mp3 format. Can she do this on Audacity and if so...how, please. Is there a better freeware program out there we can download to accomplish this. (I will most probably need a "Read Me" instruction thingy to do this. All help is surely appreciated. I think this will be fun if we can find the right program. Thank y'all....Stevo

Yes she can. You open a new project, import the files, and mixdown to a stereo wav or mp3. Ask specific questions if you run into problems.

Actually....(heh, heh)....she has informed me that they are in mp4 format....which I am not familiar with. Is there an mp4 converter(freeware) that will switch these files to wav....aud....or mp3? I thought Audacity worked with aud files....not wav and mp3. Correct me by all means. Thanks, much. Stevo

I don't know what .aud files are (.aup are the Audacity project files) but I can attest that Audacity handles .wav and .mp3 files.

You can use iTunes to export the files in a different format. Click on Edit->Preferences. Go to the 'General' tab. Click on 'Import Settings' and choose 'MP3 Encoder' or 'WAV Encoder'. This will allow you to import the files into iTunes as .mp3 or .wav files. Or if they are already in iTunes, you can right-click the file and choose 'Create .mp3 (or .wav, depending on what you chose) version'.
