Chillowack, I believe I have 4.2; not sure, that machine is down for upgrades. It is AVS Audio Editor. I don't know the difference. Audacity is something I only mess with to get old records and tapes re-recorded.

PPT, Les Paul invented tape delay, and lots of cool tape effects, (like flanging), which led to the Echo-Plex, etc. I think this is a really good oportunity to get into some recording history. Anyone else agree?

A little. He used these effects early. The delay thing is obvious (can happen by accident) and easy because the playback head is different place from the record head, for a little latency and delay.

I have heard about four dozen LP sides in my life an are very familiar with most. I don't recall any using a flanging effect.

Lots happened from LP using tape (he didn't start with tape, he started lathing discs) and the Echoplex, most notably the Mellotron, which probably has more of a direct link. You'd probably need to ask the Echoplex inventors what their inspiration was, though.

Thanks to everyone who weighed in here, I've appreciated all the input.

Special thanks to Electriclight (and ryanoliver) for pointing me to the VST plug-in instructions and KVR Audio library.

I selected KVR's Classic Reverb, which is perfect for my needs; and in the process I also grabbed a nice chorus, which is very helpful for creating the "thick" Beatles/ELO feeling I like.

I love the fact that you can get all this great stuff for free nowadays. It's actually possible to make professional-quality recordings without spending a lot of money, which is a real boon to starving artists like myself.

It's called Gverb at the bottom of the effects list. But I gotta warn you, it sucks!

Ugh! That sounds awful!

I'm not even sure that's supposed to be a reverb, it sounds like something else.

After that I need a stiff drink:

Audacity has VST GUI's now? Sweet. When did that happen?

The classic reverb plug-in is a good tool. I like it too.

I'm just a beginner too but I've been reading manuals and playing around some. Reverb is covered extensively in the manual available at...
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help...tion]Audacity: Documentation
I chose to...
Download the Audacity manual in PDF format.
...and did a search for the word "reverb". I found a lot of info in it and hope this helps you.

Thanks Tom, but just FYI, I tried that link and it didn't work.

I recommend the free plug-ins available at the KVR Audio site: in addition to reverb, there are all kinds of other free effects available there, including a chorus which I love so much, I now put it on most of my songs.

Talking Re: How Do You Do Reverb?

the audacity download site has 90 plugins in it and one of them is G-verb. I think it is a very versatile reverb plug and I use it all the time. very easy. You can also set up audacity for VST plugins, which they tell you how at the same site. I have cubase, cakewale, pro toole le, and acid and i like the audacity the best. my fellows think I am nuts cause you have to convert all the files but they sure do like my mixes.
