Default Yamaha HS50M

So i haven't seen a review for this one yet so i thought i'd make one.

Basically anything yamaha is bound to be quite good and they haven't disapointed on this one.

Sound: 9/10
Quite accurate and fairly comparable to the yamaha NS-10.

Reliability: 10/10
Only had them for about 4 months and so far not a problem with them

Overall i must say they get the job done in and i find my mixes really translate well to other sources (car, stereo, tv, etc.) I will probably end up buying a sub to get that bottom end but other than that i'm quite happy for what i've paid for.

Anyone else have an opinion?

Trent.

I use these in combination with a budget sub. The sub is a must to check low end. I agree that they translate well to other sources. I find that they lack a little depth as in effects like delay are little hard to gauge. I use them everyday and they have helped my mixes a ton.

How do justify comparing them to the NS-10's with only 4 months under your belt.... well unless your in the studio all day? But, anyways, I agree they are good for home studios. They aren't too colorful and if your not in a acoustically correct room that is a plus.

I find that the Yamaha's have great clarity but really really lack in low end. I can't tell you how many times I've mixed with these speaker and listen to the mix in my car and the low end is just booming out of the mix. A sub would probably work very well!!

What Subs are people using?

Edit:

My mistake. I thought this was about the 80M, which is the one I am talking about below. So, ignore or take it as a companion review of the 80M.

I was listening to these at a shop last week as was amazed at the clarity. Everyhing else sounded muddy or like they had some sort of distorion clouding the sound.

I think I would have bought them on the spot except for the lack of low end.
I could hear that they were going fairly low, but the volume of those lows was lacking.

I'm tempted to buy them and see how they sound at home. Maybe the low end will be loud enough in a smaller room than the shop listening room.

I have the HS50M with the HS10W subwoofer - great combination.
As indicated by some posters, I can see the monitors need the sub. I was lucky enuf to have the money for the whole package - which I recommend.
Although, you can of course add the sub later, if money is short up front.

And Oh, I must add:

I love how the sub makes my trouser legs ripple when playing loud. I have it under the desk - and you actually feel "airwaves" coming out of it....

Yeah, that's why everyone loved the NS-10s. They sounded just like car speakers.
