Default Dynaudio BM5A Reviews

Dynaudio BM5A @ Musiciansfriend

Dynaudio BM5A @ Zzounds

Dynaudio BM5A Description
The high-performance Dynaudio BM5A Powered Studio Monitor comes in a very compact design and it is extremely well-suited for production environments where space is a concern. The BM5A is well-suited for music monitoring and mixing, broadcasting, OB vans, edit suites, playback suites, project studios, and smaller post-production facilities.

I'm going to hold back from filling in the regular feedback form for now since these are too new to me to really answer the questions (I mean, at just a couple of weeks old, one would hope that their reliability is a 10!).

So, this is an initial review.

Although the BM5a's have hte smallest front face footprint of any monitors I've owned, it shouldn't be assumed that the 5 in BM5a means they have a 5 inch woofer. I'm not sure what the 5 does stand for, but the woofers are 6.9ins. These are the biggest sounding small monitors I've ever used. The bass is incredible from these babies. The monitors go back quite a way... I'm guessing that's how they get that big sound out of them.

The tweeters don't appear to be tiring (as I've seen in other reviews). The monitors overall have a really nice balance and an incredibly rich sound. They have three switches on the back that allow cut and boost of a couple of dB's in 3 frequency bands to customize to your room.

The imaging is the first thing that really blew me away with these things. Everything is placed so perfectly. I'm hearing subtle parts in commercial recordings I've never heard on any other system because I get a width of sound that I've never had before. To me they seem to have quite a narrow sweet spot, which might be a bad thing if you're sharing your control room. For me, that's just fine, and boy is that spot sweet!

These monitors can go very loud.

I've used Adam S2A's at the high end, Tannoy Active Reveal at the medium end and M-Audio BX8a's (with a BX10 sub), KRK Rokit 6, Alesis M1 MkII, all fairly extensively. The BM5A's are my favourites. Richer sounding than the Adam's, and just better in every way to all the others.

Quality: 9
Obviously I treat all my monitors carefully, so I am not too sure if it will break easily. It all seems to be very well made though. Solid.

The sound is amazing for its price. It's the cheapest Dynaudio on the market, but that doesn't mean it's a budget rip off. It's a full Dynaudio with matching sound quality. Obviously big studios will opt for a larger size, for a bit more low end and possibly volume, but this is good enough for nearly anyone. Its bigger brother, the BM6A, is around 400 bucks more expensive and likely won't justify the extra money for most folks. In fact, if you are in a small studio or even your own home, the extra size of the BM6A can be a burden. The BM5A can already be very loud if need be.
The BM5A is very detailed and pleasing to the ear. I do not find it to be tiring to my ears, even after 10 hours straight.

I think the Dynaudio BM5A is one of the 'cheapest' professional quality monitors on the market. Its most obvious competition would be the Genelec 8030 (around 900 bucks). I prefer the Dynaudio because it's less tiring on my ears and I think it's less aggressive.

Reliability: 7
From previous experiences I can say that Dynaudio has a good support.

But fortunately no problems with the BM5A.

Overall Rating: 8
I would definitely recommend this product to anyone that is serious about producing/mixing. I wouldn't recommend this to 'beginners', but that's mostly due to the relatively large pricetag.

If you have the money, go out and listen to a set of BM5As and see/listen for yourself .

These things are great. One of my happiest gear purchases ever. True about the sweet spot. They are a bit finnicky with respect to placement. There's not much "bloom effect" either: they sound the same quiet as loud which is mega-important for getting consistent results. The switches on the back actually do something!
