Ok I admit... I really am an old dog! All these new tricks make me tired! Whatever happened to roll over and shake and play dead? I still like to lay down! I have never been much good a healing either! Keep getting kicked in the chops!

Here's an interesting thread on Reaper and Cubase:

Cubase vs Reaper - Gearslutz.com

(Brandon, I'm new to the forum, I apologize in advance if it's politically incorrect to cross-post to another forum.)

Also, some interesting DAW benchmarking:

D.A.W Bench : D.A.W Performance Benchmarking

All in all, it kind of looks like Reaper will be my choice as a new user with not huge midi requirements.

Cheers,

D

You have to note that the Gearslutz thread is 2007. The current Reaper is a summer 2008 release. I've never used the previous version, but in my try outs, the current Reaper beats Cubase LE4 hands down for ease of use. Sound is every bit as good as Cubase LE4, Ableton Live 7, and Protools LE. I really like how the all the VST plug ins work and the mic pre peak meters are very easy to read and adjust due to the small horizontal bars and the colors prior to peak. I'm a total amateur at this but I learn fast. I want to record, not figure out how to run software. Reaper is very easy to learn and use. I like the interface better than Protools LE as well. Like it better than Ableton Live 7. Just like it and it doesn't break the bank.

Yes, I should've pointed out the dates. That said, the thread does run from 2007 to May 2008 (just 4 months ago). This does precede the Reaper 2.0 release, but is still interesting in that there are a lot of positive comments *before* that 2.0 update.

Thumbs up Re: Reaper

*thumbs up* for Reaper.

Its really impressive what this tiny little program can do. 3,3mb installer, 50$ personal use license, and for me the wohle functionality of Cubase (better: all the functions I have found and used in Cubase).

We started recording our band with Reaper, when we had Cubase just crashing on every machine we tried. It was a hell of a configuration mess. I agree, that Cubase may be good for special hardware, but if you got a Firewire interface with ASIO drivers... its a 2-click configuration in Reaper.

I like the quote they have on their website:

Cubase LE4 came with a Presonus unit. The Ableton was the 7 Live full demo. Protools M-powered 7.4 was purchased. Tried them all with real mics fed into different AD converters. i'll try to upload it. i'm a total recording rookie.

I tried some other freeware, too. But the interfaces were junk, until Reaper. I put an SM81 up to an acoustic guitar and it sounded pretty good on Reaper. But my experience with recording stuff is limited. I'm sure you'll be able to run Reaper through its paces better than I can.

I had to re-configure the audio settings over and over again and it still seems to drop the device out of it's device lists. I believe it is a communications problem and maybe there are some tweaks that might help that. Overall, it seems like a very nice DAW especially doing the 64 bit processing like Sonar 7. I'm also going to upgrade the BIOS in my laptop to see if that helps. The big thing for me is that Cubase LE has a problem communicating with my FireStudio Tube. They won't admit it and they don't seem to be doing anything about it. Too bad, they lost yet another sale (upgrade). I know of many folks returning their units or just blowing off Cubase.....they aren't very smart about how they are dealing with this. There also seems to be a major disconnect between laptop manufacturers and the audio interface industry. Very few laptops supposedly qualify to work with firewire audio devices. Of course, Apple's laptops are completely compatible.
I fought this for months, as of a week ago i am able to get my Presonus Firestudio Project to work with my laptop with no skips. I have to disable my wireless internet card and I have to have an external firewire card (via expresscard) that is NOT a COMBO CARD (ex. firewire AND USB). It has to have a TI chipset (which is mine) or a VIA set. it should work at 48 KHZ. It seems to work at 96 KHZ for me but ive done a lot of things to my laptop. btw im running a Toshiba Satellite with Vista 4 GB RAM
