I've played with (don't own but really want) Groove Agent, by Steinberg, I think. Sounds like what you want. If you want to use different samples on the patterns it/you made, you can save the MIDI and have it play the new sample. These are good and the auto-programming for the purposes of songwriting is nice. I use Band in a Box plus Battery plus other soft synth stuff I have. No exactly elegant.

Hey GB after kickin it arond a bit i was just wonderin if youd reccomend yr set up to me. Seems like it'd be super simple to use but how happy are you with the sound quality? And what about ease of generating fairly original drum riffs. I realize Groove Agent would prob cost less than yr parts combined, but what about say,,, just Band in a box? Do you think a gentleman could be happy with that alone? Not really DYIN to spend $280 or so on software, but def have not ruled Groove Agent out. The pieces I use for making something out of MIDI (live backing tracks, instrument tracks I'm not performing) are: BIAB - Pretty cool. The PC version is much nicer than the crap Mac version I have. Sounds like these days there are some virtual instruments in there that don't totally suck. Battery - Love this. Full quality drum library/VSTi. MachFive - Hate this. But I have it and use it. Model 12 and others - Random VSTi offerings bundled with DP. Kurzweil K2VX - Controller and handy sounds available from the AES/EBU output. Yamaha MU80 - Half-rack XG (fancy GM+ soundset) for quick MIDI use. If I'm working with BIAB, I drive this module. Sounds good on its out and the drums are actually not bad. These are actually great "helper" sounds to layers on other thing to beef them up. On generating stuff, I'd give it a 5. I play well enough to either use my drums or spend some time programming my own based on what the computer put down. Works for me. The handiest part is instant bass part and some sort of chordal background to work from. In other words, great for scratch tracks. That's most of
