In all fairness, Mastering should be done by someone that has not been involved in the recording.
A fresh perspective is necessary, as when you try this DIY Mastering thing, you just end up constantly remixing the tracks (I'm guilty for it)....
Also Mastering engineers generally don't have 1 girl friend between them, wear hideous woolen jumpers and 'Nike Air Jerusalem Sandals' and have been learning their craft of Mastering for 30 years.
The DIY home thing is ok for getting levels louder etc but the amount of times I hear tracks with 'That EQed sound' and massively too loud mixes where everything in the mix has become grainy and to me, horrible.
Talking about Wavelab... I generally use that program for encoding MP3's now haha...A very expensive MP3 encoder (and it works great)
