Default Mastering?

what exactly is mastering?

i've heard of some of the many processes involved before. i've even seen lists written of the steps one may take when mastering, but like everything in this biz, opinions seem to vary on how you should do things from person to person.

are there any hard and fast rules to mastering?

what steps do you take?

i'm just trying to get a feel for the whole process. i'm guessing i've been doing a few of the steps in my works, but don't know if you should do things in any particular order to achieve the best results.

any takers?

Check out these previous discussions and hop on, hang on, and ... jump in.

You've asked a lot of broad questions which will be difficult to answer in one "cohesive" thread. Somewhere on this forum there's been a very recent discussion on the master bus chain but can't seem to find it right now.
