Welcome. Nothing special about using Nuendo, except for the really nice interface and fancy-dancy audio engine. All the other rules and techniques employed with magnetic tape, Pro Tools, Digital Performer, Logic et al. apply.

Tips? Mix in mono. Treat your room. Get a sub. Spend real money on a good microphone. Sit up straight (no joke). For mastering, get the mix as good as you can and master that in a separate project. Back up your files. Don't forget to tip the wait-staff. All the usual rules apply. Oh, yes... some dumb-ass will tell you there are no rules to mixing and mastering or to anything else. Punch him in the face and tell him there are no rules against that, either.

Ok is an MXL 990 mic ok? Room is treated and I have a sub. What are the best plugins to use for rap vocals?

I wouldn't characterize this as spending real money on a good microphone. I don't think anybody would if they were being honest with themselves. MXL 's gimmick especially makes me laugh: "Mogami-wired" That's hilarious! I have about a quarter mile of Mogami cable in my studio, you'd be hard-pressed to come up with 6 inches in a microphone. No wonder marketing guys get all the babes.

It's not a great approach to segment tool for one genre versus another. Some things are useful and sound good in certain circumstances, others, less so. You will want to see what plug-in you have now and work with them before you dump a bunch of money on third party stuff. For my needs, I get by very well with a bunch of the UAD-1 stuff and Roger Nichols' Frequelizer.

In my experience the best ways to learn *about* mixing is to either spend a lot of time watching someone do it and/or read some good books on the topic. Some of my favorite books include:
The Mixing Engineer's Handbook by Bobby Owsinski
Mixing Audio by Roey Izhaki
Mixing with your Mind (more advanced) By Michael Stravrou

The only way to learn *how to mix* is to do it. Spend 4 hours mixing for every hour you read or haunt internet forums and you'll learn to mix eventually.
