just like the name says

you can look at the frequencies and see their amplitude
from say 20cps up to 20kcps. record a sweep frequency and see how flat your equipment is. playback a sweep frequency and take readings around your room to see if it has standing waves.

if you look at the freq spectrum and see very low or high ranges of freqs you can use eq to flatten out the response if the actual instruments being played didnt cause those bumps, but was caused by the equipment/room/etc.

or you can take the low freqs and boost them so the bass will stand out or boost the midrange to make the soloist stand out

if you see a spike at 50-60 cycles from hum
put a notch filter on that to remove the problem

of course you could probably do all this without a spectrum analysis but it does help do the fixes more accurately

Music or any audio signal is present in some frequency range. What we hear as music are actually individual frequencies in the range from 20Hz to 20kHz (theoretically). Frequency analysis is a process which displays a moment in time on a two-dimensional chart. On the horizontal axis you have frequencies, on the vertical you have the amplitude (strength).

Frequency analysis can help you too "see" the music you are listening to.

An interesting thing you can do is analyze a pro recording and see how it compares visually to your own. I learned a lot by doing this.

theres actually a web site modernbeats.com which does this for you! you have to pay for it but they will give you a very detailed look inside the production of top hits. I am trying to learn this now because if you can pull apart every instrument and "carve" a space out for each instrument the mix will sound sonically better. If there is a turtorial out there about the frequency spectrum and carving instruments out to place them in a more sonic place please pass that along..it would be much appreciated.
