Remember that the 40s are your reference and you should suspect the other systems.
You're saying to trust my headphones anyway. The 40s are that good? To be honest, I don't know if they are that accurate or not. They're the first I've ever used.

It's a stretch to say any phones are that good, but you have to keep a perspective.

Headphones have quite a bit going for them by design.
Home audio is at the mercy of the room, and often, with mediocre components. Plus, controlling a woofer is much harder than a 40mm headphone transducer.

The 40fs were on my budget list for a long time. And, I feel they would have done a very good job. Today, I ordered a higher priced home set (open back) because I had the extra cash. I have cheaper Yamaha and Tascam fones here and the Tascam might be a budget AT.

You have to have a reference, and your headphones are it. These AT don't give a exaggerated bass, so keep that in mind.

Build up a reference set of commercial recordings in classical, jazz, rock, etc., so you can build some confidence in what is accurate.

EDIT; The album in my avatar is not a bad place to start for Jazz. I have the cassette from 1969 and (now) the remastered CD is petty good. Two songs : ) 32:45 and 5:37minutes.
