Default 80hz cut

Is it really a common practice to cut at 80hz? I know it depends on the song and the sound you are looking for, but I guess my question is this a usual practice? And is it usually done to the stereo mix? why not take care of this on the multitrack session?
thank you!

I always drop everything below 70 on the bass track so it seems like maybe that was the wrong thing to do because you lose the choice to drop it or leave it. This is not an answer really but just my take. I like to get each track ready then work on the final mix after limiting frequencies on individual tracks.

I've never heard of anything like this, unless you are tlaking about inserting a highpass filter set to 80hz on certain individual tracks... that is probably more common but is not really part of the mastering process.

It would be something that I would do during mixdown on selected individual tracks that I felt warranted it.

My reasons can be varied, but have a general purpose in mind. I want the tracks to all sit together the best they possibly can as a song.

I tend to like to cut vocals off at around 80hz. There's not a lot going on down below that for a lot of vox. Helps clear the mix up a bit, for me at least. Keeps the energy in the vocal lines, in my opinion. Of course, I am still learning, so take this how you will.

Guitars get the same treatment around 100 hz. Get their bottom end out of the way for the bass and kick.

I have yet to cut @ 80hz on the stereo bus, but I can't rule it out entirely. I have done a slight shelving cut @ 50hz on the stereo bus, more to see what kind of clarity and punch I could get out of the low end while keeping the low end.

I hope that helps a bit.

During mixdown I usually set a high pass at 100hz on every track that is not a kick drum.
