| Quality: 10 For $100, you get a mic that simply can't be beat for certain snare and guitar amp sounds. Its also usable for just about everything as Brandon mentioned earlier. Reliability: 10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33QPLbQi9FI The microphone is an SM58 which is just a 57 with a windscreen on it. The shit's indestructable. Overall Rating: 10 Best $100 I ever spent. I attached a sample of a dry vocal using my 57 since someone asked for it. |

I know that this is an old thread but I just wanted to share a little story. After reading this post I went to the local music store to buy the SM 57. The guy working there asked me what I was going to use it for..I told him; recording voice and maybe some guitar. He said that the mic was useless for voice recording, and that without using some diapraghm(sp?) mic I would get craaaaapppy sound... Well I told him to just give me the SM57 since I was pretty confident after reading this thread. Thank you |

| Quality: 7 The SM57 makes love to the music industry in many different forms. It holds down the snare very nicely, is really good for micing electric guitar amps, and ok for bass amps. Pretty much, any thing that is loud will do well. I would not recommend using these for vocals when recording, because there are so many other microphones that do a MUCH better job, however, for live shows they are fine. Reliability: 7 The word on the street is these things never break, but one of mine broke after 4 years, and I was forced to buy a new one. Overall Rating: 7 Overall I ended up buying a new one yesterday actually so I would be an idiot to say I did not recommend this mic, I DO. I know many people that have recorded albums with only this mic (not recommended), with pretty good results. |

hey brandon, im hoping to mainly record electric guitar and some acoustic guitar, and i have a beyerdynamic opus 29S Microphone. i havent recorded with it yet since i havent gone ahead to buy any other equipment, but i was wondering if, since i already have the Opus 29S, it would be a waste of money to buy the SM57?

Yeah, if you have a Beyedynamc Opus 29S, I wouldn't both with a 57 at this stage in the game. It'll be different, but probably not "better". Brandon |
