R0DE NT4 Description
he RDE NT4 Dual-Element Stereo Microphone is a small-diaphragm condenser microphone specifically designed for stereo recording. It features dual heads in a 90° XY configuration great for acoustic guitar, live concerts, and when mono-compatibility is an issue. Its compact size and design allows for effective and subtle positioning which is crucial when close miking. The NT4 is supplied with a custom case, stereo breakout cable, stand mount, and windscreen.

I got one, and it's great for rehearsals, and dual micing to amps, acoustic guitars, everything best I can tell. I know there's better stuff but great for an amateur.

Reliability: 9
got it used, 3 years later and my wife thought it was new.

Overall Rating: 9
I'm sure there's better but it's low noise and crisp. Love it for room recording.

I rented one of these to record our band live with just an Mbox and an ibook. I wanted to keep it simple. It did a great job of capturing the band and the simplicity of one mic in fixed X/Y on one mic stand makes it great for this purpose

I later recorded my acoustic guitar with it and did an A/B comparison with my pair of SM81s in X/Y. At this point I realized that the Rode is coloring the sound in a way that I am not too fond of compared to the Shures. The SM81 sounds objective and truer to the source to my ear than the NT4 does.

Reliability: 10
Just like the NT1a I used to own, the NT4 is solidly built and seems like it will last a long time. The mic clip seemed sturdy too. I think for capturing band practices or recording overheads or an acoustic guitar in stereo, this mic is an easy to use, point and shoot tool.

Overall Rating: 8
I'll give it an 8. My only fault with it was the color I heard it adding to the source on my acoustic guitar. It is not obvious at all and I probably would not have even realized it without comparing it to the SM81s side by side.

I really do like the fact that it is in a permanently fixed X/Y configuration, no messing around with stereo bars and eying in angles. If I were only going to record our band or small acoustic groups with 2 channels and the Mbox, this mic would be a more useful tool to me than the pair of SM81s, just from the aspect of ease of use. Because I sometimes need to record 2 different acoustic instruments at the same time, it works better for me to have 2 SM81s that can be used on the 2 different sources.
