I'm a sucker for cheap mic's that boast a lot of nice features. These mic's are no exception(I found a set of these for $190 new). I wouldn't pick up this mic pack expecting it to perform miracles or even completely handle the drums all on it's own but they definetely make a worthy addition if used properly. First, forget the kick mic(KBM412), with a lot of EQ it's barely adequate(unless you're desperate). There's a definite lack of low end punch to this thing, when I mic up my kick I wanna feel it in my chest, this guy doesn't do it. However, it makes a very capable low tom mic and that's where I keep it(it's HUGE though). Second, the TSM411. A nice little hypercardoid mic, and the absolute best justification for buying this pack(4 hypercardoid's for $200-$220!). As a tom mic these work great. They definitely have some nice sounding mid's going on. Putting it up against a snare though brings out one obvious problem that is mostly due to the pickup pattern.. *pong*.. *pong*.. *pong*.... Nothin' but batter head. So unless you like hearing a nice snappy *pong* everytime you hit the snare this guy just won't do. Stick this guy on the bottom and put an SM57/snare mic of choice on there, works excellent in that setup. I also use these for a high hat mic they'll definitely do the job in that area. Overheads(ICM417) are fairly good, not quite as bright as I would like but nothing a little eq can't smooth out. When recording I prefer to use Naiant Studio's X-M's for my overheads though, super bright and awesome.. but they're omnidirectional. The mic clips are fine, they have plastic threads which sucks so be carefully when you're screwing these guys on. Is summary.... These mic's are excellent for the price. Don't expect these to take care of all your drum mic'ing needs but there's no other mic pack out there that gives you 4 good hypercardoid mics(along with 3 other decent mics) for the price you can snag these for if you look around. I have not used these for anything other than mic'ing drums at this point. The TSM411 and may make a good guitar cab mic but that's about it. Sound 7/10 Price 9/10 Durability 7/10(they seem well built, I've only had them for 2months) Overall 8/10 Last edited by haveigonemental; 06-03-2009 at 01:25 AM. |
