Unhappy WMP won't play my MP3s!

Hi!
Using a EMU0404 USB2.0 as my DAW on my PC desktop. I'm able to hear my mp3 stuff on just about anything on my computer... using Cubase Studio 4, Sequel, even NERO media player.

But when I try to listen to them via Window Media Player, (even when I've closed all other applications) it keeps showing the message:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."

Which is totally not true!

Tried every setting in WMP but to no avail. Is it due to some setting in Cubase that is overidding this instead (even when Cubase, or for that matter, nothing is running in the background)?

Please help coz don't think Mr Gate's ppl have any clue what I'm talking about if I consulted them while I'm sure the good folks on this forum certainly do!

Thanks!

Have you set your Emu 0404 as the default soundcard in Windows Control Panels? I believe this is the first place that Media Player looks before playing a file.

The only other time I remember having that problem was when I attempted to play 24bit wav files in Media Player.

Unhappy Re: WMP won't play my MP3s!

Dear Brandon,

Thanks for the advice man! But now, forget about WMP as I've got bigger issues! I had already done it way before and it was working fine all along until.....

1. 2 nights ago when my Computer wouldn't start up for a long while and when it finally did, this message about "overclocking failed.... reset to default..." came up.

2. Concurrently, I upgraded my cpu to a Intel Core 2 Quad from a Duo... I've got 2 gig Ram so memory not an issue.

Since then, my computer had been behaving very cranky. (eg. In Cubase, previous works of mine that had Proteus X could not be opened as it keeps saying that I need to insert the Proteus CD eventhough it is already installed in my system...)

Now, to make matters worse, no sound is coming out from my EMU 0404 usb 2.0 to my speakers (krk5s), which is connected via unbal cables. This is not just for Cubase alone but for all other progs like Sequel or even plain Internet streaming stuff. The thing is, when I plug in my headphones into the jack on the 0404, I can hear the stuff.

So, is this a setting on my Computer that's messed up or a setting in Cubase?

Help!!!!

This is the big question. If you are getting errors with overclocking, something MUCH bigger than Cubase is going on. That's a BIOS thing that doesn't even involve Windows (at least that is what I suspect). That tells me that something is screwy right from the start.

If it were me, I'd back up everything important and format that thing. That's how I solve computer problems. If I suspect it's gonna take more than a few hours to fix the issue, I format.

You've got some many things going wrong with your system that I'm not sure where I would start. Losing Proteus is extremely weird. In fact, if Cubase couldn't find Proteus it would do nothing. This sounds like an issue with Proteus itself.

Hmmm. A clue. This sounds like a major suspect in the cause of your problems. If you must use internet with a recording computer, I always recommend setting up a dual boot system. It's easier than you think and completely solved 90% of the problems in a recording rig.

Dear Brandon,

I guess I was hoping for a quick fix (something along the line of unchecking a "mute" button!) but I must admit you are right.

Just dredding to have to go through the entire process of reformatting as well as re-installing all my softwares, not to mention reconfigure all the settings (eg latency....) via hours of manual readings after I've finally got it down to acceptable standards!

There goes my weekend...

Thanks again for the advice! Really appreciate it!

Yeah,I was hoping to give you some good news, but you've got to many random problems. You should take a look at this. It's saved me a few weekends myself:
