I have heard that if I record say, a long show in one go, and go over 17gb, I could have data loss and hard disk corruption using Vista. Supposedly, this corruption can only be cured with a reformat of the hdd in question. Apparently the max file size under XP was even smaller. My research shows that the NTFS system will allow a max of 256tb... If I wanted to record a 2 hour gig using 10 tracks or so, I don't want to run into this problem. I'm the guitarist/singer so screwing around w/ the comp every few songs will be a real PITA...but I'm sure I could work something out. Probably not something any of us would generally run into, but has anyone else heard about anything like this? |

If I had to do this I would find out for myself first. Hook up 10 mics on 10 channels and push record. Play a stereo for 2 hours and see if your hardware is up to the task. I would be worried about overheating and if anything would try and run and cause a crash.

It depends on the resolution you are recording at and the software you are using to record...24 bit is a 2GB limit....32 bit is 4GB...No way around that...It doesn't matter what NTFS can do...Now if you get to 64 bit on your audio, then you can do the 256TB files... However, you will have 10 tracks which means 10 separate files.... If you use 24 bit 48 kHz and each track is mono, you can do it...stereo 24 bit 48k is 1GB per hour...So 10 mono tracks at that resolution at max file size of 2GB would be nearly 4 hours long... But as the previous post mentioned...Just plug it in and test it...There can be further limitations that depend on your audio software... |

AHHH!!!! That makes sense...the PROJECT could be 40G as long as each file wasn't over 2G...mental block on my part, I was thinking of the entire project, not as individual files. Allright, I'll try tac's suggestion...I'll post my findings.
