Default Tweaking XP for music recording

DuX' XP DAW Tweak Guide.pdf

Some very nice info for optimising XP. I guess it's geared towards advanced users, but hopefully someone will get some use out of it.

Feel free to use this thread for sharing tips on getting the most out of windows as a music recording environment, lord knows it's not perfect out of the box.

Somewhere, the Dux guys have XP iso file that has been totally stripped all unnecessary junk. I'm running it now on my recording rig and have been very happy with it. They've changed a few ways in which the navigation works, but overall it seems to be 100% optimized.

I wish there would be an executable file that does everything described in that guide

One man's trash is another man's treasure - the print spooler is essential to some people and useless to others.

Sorry, but it has to be done the hard way

Do I really need an internet connection? Does anyone run a music computer without any connection to the outside world?

I am contemplating setting up a PC with no internet connection, specifically for music. I.e. Not using it for ANYTHING else. No gaming, no porn, no printing, no nothing, no anti-virus, no firewall, no ventrillo ... you get the picture ... just music.

If I need to transfer files to/from my internet PC, then I can use an external hard drive, or whatever.

I think it would be a pain in the arse though to get updates/drivers for the various software.

Vain Melody, you don't need another computer. Just partition your hard drive, and have two operating systems: one for music and one for internet and other junk. Tons of people do it because you can be sure that you'll have minimal bloat on your music making PC.. as for updates and drivers, just prepare a little and download them in advance. As a minimum I would make three partitions: music OS, internet OS and shared (data).

I will follow your advice BUT instead of partitioning drives I am going to buy a new drive (assuming my case can accomodate a third HDD). I HAVE to buy something.

I guess I'll try the DuX overhaul too (as I call it) - but I wonder if I do need a new computer
