Is the only way to clone a drive by bit by bit or can you clone gigs at a time?

You can clone the entire drive in one go. The disk imaging software makes an exact copy of everything on the drive exactly as you have it set up and stores that information in an image file.

so the entire process(time to clone) depends on how much your cloning, plus other variables such as cpu speed to process and etc correct? Im asking because i have a 40 gig hard drive(i know its tiny ) and im looking to either get a 500gb or since there cheap right now a tb drive, this cloning will take everything on my drive and place it excatly where it should on the new drive. so that the desktop looks the same and all that correct? what imaging software would you recommend.

I use Acronis True Image. There's also Norton Ghost.
