Apologies that this is detracting slightly from the main topic.

The cool thing about linux is that you can automate a lot of things through scripting.

Linux is more efficient on a bad day than Windows is on a good day.

That's why I'm interested in moving to Linux.
I have been a unix user (at work) since the early 80's and a linux user since the earliest releases.

How is the firewire audio support on linux these days ? I haven't been keeping up with the audio side of things.

I had one of those last year, I noticed a weird service running, I couldn't search for it, the browser would redirect somewhere else.

The anti-virus stuff I had couldn't find anything.

I downloaded Hijack This and managed to stop the problem and remove it.

It all started by downloading a driver or something from a site that wasn't legit, but appeared to be.

I don't use anti-virus software usually. I scan every couple months and usually find nothing.

I'll do one today.

All the realtime anti-virus software I've tried interfered too much with Pro Tools.

Used ClamWin to scan my 4 drives, took about 3 hours, found nothing, not that I expected it to.

I think my last scan was in April, one before that was November.

This is my main recording computer that is online 24/7, only thing that may make it different than yours is that I'm using a router.

I teach IT. Every year these young kids, fresh outta high school, come in to learn software engineering. Like clockwork, as soon as they begin to grasp the basics of coding, the 'viruses' start doing the rounds. It becomes a contest to see who can write the best one. I dont condone this in any way but there is a part of human nature that has many virus-like qualities; an unspoken desire to destroy.
Honestly, viruses will always be around as long as there are humans roaming this earth.

This is why we will never better as human beings because we all have this desire to be different to be the best to be heard etc etc. We are the virus, its up to ourselves to control it.

This is why I highly recommend cloning your machine. When it gets infected or bogged down with spyware just restore it from your backup image. Works great. I don't use anti-this and anti-that. That software is ineffective.
