Default need a new computer

I am currently running an AMD Athlon 64 processor (1.81 ghz), 2.72 gigs of ram, SB Live 24 bit sound card. I use Fl Studios, MP3 gain and Cubase for all my recording. I use a PodXT live going straight into my computer. Everything is fine until I try using Cubase. Tracks cut out on playback, recording stops while I'm playing, it freezes alot, won't save current file with changes. It wasn't so bad on my first recording, but the 2nd one was hell. I've checked and rechecked everything, inputs, outputs, set up, defraging hard drive, making sure all other programs are turned off, but nothing seems to help. I been thinking about getting a computer STRICTLY for home recording. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions on the components for making one, processor, ram, sound card, video card, etc.....Keep in mind this computer will be used ONLY for home recording. I'm really tired of the freezes, single tracks cutting out, restarting my computer-lol, you get the idea.

I'm not ready for Vista and can't justify a Mac Pro. Meanwhile, today is the last day that Windows XP is available from PC vendors. So, this weekend I bought one of these:
Systemax Venture N4000 Desktop PC - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 2.66GHz, genuine Windows Vista® Business, nForce 680i LT, 3GB, 500GB, DVDRW, Combo, 8600GT, Gigabit 989875 at TigerDirect.com
Comes with XP installed and a Vista upgrade (for whenever I'm ready). Quad core. I hope that Pro Tools M likes it... :-/

Hi WidowMaker1, instead of buying a new computer what about duel booting - you could have all your everyday stuff on one installation and have the 2nd just for music. That way you can tweak your music install anyway you like and not have it buggered up by apps and settings you use for everything else. You can also have the option of disabling any hardware you don't need for music like TV tuner cards etc which would reduce the chance of conflicts.

Even if XP isn't available, apparently ( which means, double check :-) ) you will still be able to activate XP for a few more years. I saw one report that mentioned 2014 as the cut off which seemed to be a long time, but seeing how well Vista is working for micro$oft it might be correct.

This is red flag #1. Those other programs shouldn't even be there in the first place. If you can't afford to have a dedicated computer for recording, a dual boot is a necessity in my opinion.

This is a good move. In fact, making the computer dedicated to your needs would probably take care of the problem. My rig is similar to your current one. (Althon 64 2800, 2GB RAM). I don't have any problems unless I'm pushing the rig VERY hard. So, I think there is something fundamentally screwing with your system to begin with.

With that said, I recommend going with the fastest setup you can afford. I'd stick with XP. I'd make sure the chipset of the motherboard/USB2.0/Firewire is compatible with your audio interface.

As for the audio interface, I'd check out the Home Recording Soundcard Wizard.
