Default intel DP35DP or an intel DX38BT

Hello All,

New to the site.
I'm a musician planning to self produce. Ready to buy or build a computer.

I plan to build one. A PC. I have looked at Rain Recording web site and tried to make a blueprint of what they're doing.

Mobo question?
The expensive ones they sell have either an intel DP35DP or an intel DX38BT.
What makes those special aside from being intel?

Thanks.

Quad core is still for me and for my other buddies the way to go. The majority of Asus P5 boards will work well and as a Yamaha 01x owner I know all about hardware compatability issues. I too wrestled with the chipset question for a good while but eventually opted for the 965 and am happy with the decision, I cant say about the P35 chipset as have no experience of them but if the worksation builders are using them it stands to reason they are probably good for DAW work.

The 95w Quad core is my preference and will O/C easily past the stock 6800 without issues, so save yourself a bunch there.

To be clear I have personally built 3 rigs for around a standard P5 (chipset 1333) and a P5 deluxe wi-fi. As for RAM I like the OCZ stuff, but don't skimp here.

Whether you go for a board supporting DDR3 is something I cant help you with as my last build I just couldnt warrant the extra cost and if you read the reviews around the time the technology wasnt going to give me much more anyway.

Also, get a GOOD PSU, stable power deliver across all 3 rails is so important for glitch free operation. I spent £120 quid on a semi fanless Nesteq which todate has been running steady as rock.

Computer hardware manufacturers "time align" their products for maximum profits. They know that some sucker is going to pay $400 for a motherboard. Therefor they always make sure to have their latest motherboard set at a ridiculously high price. From there they'll QUICKLY ramp the price down. So the motherboard that was $400 3 months ago may be half that or less now. In other words, I wouldn't buy an expensive motherboard unless you are worried about being outdated in 3 months.

So going back to your question, those chipsets are probably the latest. That's it. For 4x the price you could use all these latest components and come out with a computer that may be 10% faster or so.

I want to point out that my recording computer is an Athlon 64 2800. It's dated by todays standards. So what! I'm cranking out the best mixes of my life! So, you may want hold back and put together a less expensive computer (that would still smoke mine) and focus your bucks on the things that are going to make your mixes great. I've heard some TERRIBLE mixes from guys with REALLY fast computers. Just keep that in mind.
