The easiest thing usually is to check that the Administrator user is open.

This is accessed by, at the login screen press ctrl+alt+del, and in the username box type try "Administrator", and try the password as blank at first.

If that doesnt work, try "Administrator", "Admin", "Compaq" (Or whatever your make is) in the password field.

If none of this works, message back, there are ways to recover the passwords, but they take a bit more knowledge, and possibly the use of Linux.

Correction for above, hold ctrl+alt and at the same time tap the "delete" key twice

Just wondering: does that ctrl+alt(+delete*2) work on the welcome screen?

'cause if it does not, push F8 during boot-up, select "Safe Mode" and then try the Administrator login.

Also available are several password removers
they are usually called something like 'Xp password remover ect'.
put your realtime antivirus up very high when you go find these.
scan em well.
load it onto a usb.
boot up any win OS
password gone.

cheers
