Default Fuk me susie!

well gentleman let me give you the senerio and see if you guys can help me out here, on saturday i was running a session on my computer, i then touched my foot on the side of the computer case, I got this piercing sound out of my monitors and my computer shut off. when i turned it back on i lost my drivers for my sound card, now this isnt the first time these drivers vanished, but normally i would just drop in the installation disk and it brought it back , this time its saying the (ikernel? installation component is missing?) the cpu only boots in safe mode now. I went out and bought a new compac since i needed a new pc any way but its vista and my sound blaster audigy2 isnt recongnized by it. I am going to download the vista drivers for it but what else would i need to resolve the problem with the other pc? it has to be a driver problem since it boots in safe mode but i do not have the internet so i cant run a reg cleaner any suggestions, also i want to copy all my files from my old hard drive onto the new one in the compac is there a easy way to do this, i bought an external inclosure do i just go into it and copy folder by folder.

I would suspect it not just drivers. Can you boot with the card removed ?? I would examine the guts looking for loose components.

i actually took my interface out and put it in my new compac, last night i got it to boot up and run with the interface out. but my interface works with the new compac with vista after i loaded the vista patch. Now im in the process of getting my info off of the old drive and onto my new one. but i keep getting the message you dont have permission to do this or that. vista suks and ive just started using it. Now my main concern is getting my daw software off of my old drive and my plugins, im sure i need a vista patch to run the cool edit? would my hard drive have the actuall exe file for cool edit? when i click on the cool edit icon inside of my old drive when its connected via usb enclosure it says that i must re run the set up is this because of vista?

Much of the modern software depends on the OS registry to run (really(another) stupid idea from microsoft).

If you have new and better spec computer, you might consider running your old drive in it as the boot drive.

i was thinking about doing this, but can i still keep the new hard drive with vista on it just change the jumpers around and run it as a slave drive? now what if im not too sure about my old hard drives life expectency? can i just use this to reconfigure this new computer then partition it so that the old drive only holds the o.s? thanks in advance

I normally put the new drive on bus2 as primary and then it's just another storage device.
You could try and set-up a multi-boot. or, maybe you can select the vista drive from BIOS boot selection.

I don't know what set-up disks you have, but I often just format the new disk, copy my old drive over, then initialize it as a boot disk. You then have to setup drivers for the new hardware, but much of that is automatic.

I am a strong practitioner of keeping partitions. My new Vista laptop was a bear to partition because it had little secret files hidden about.

You seem to have a good handle on what you might do, so just think it through and know where you are going to turn for "files/drivers" when something hangs-up.

The smooth route is to just boot your old disk and use the new disk as your "new" data/recording disk. The drivers you may need for the new hardware will be on your second disk. From there, you can worry about dual-boot crap and partitions. Both systems use the same type disk, right ??

Oh, there will be a chance of the vista drivers not working under the old OS, but that is par for the course. I often have the drivers downloaded before my new machine arrives.

i dont have internet at the house yet so its hard to have drivers and software at my disposal. im thinking more and more that if i do a reg clean i could fix the majority of the problems. the old drive is from 02 so im sure it should be replaced anyway. im just going to try to get all my data off of it and run the new 300gb as my new drive then get a 2nd back up, they have terabyte drives for around 115 up my way so you cant go wrong. also my old drive is ide and this new drive is sata. thanks again for your knowlegde.
