Default Don't understand Drivers

I can't figure this out. I used to record with my little usb tascam 122 interface to sonar le on an out of date dell laptop. This worked for me pretty well until we had a summer heat wave here in Portland and I fried the motherboard. Few months later a bought my current desktop so I can get back to recording. Figured this desktop would be way better for recording since it has 2gig ram, 3.4 ghz processor, and I installed a 500gig slave hd to house my new sonar 8 software and projects.
So I got my sonar loaded up nicely then installed my tascam us 122 software w/ drivers and thought i was ready to roll. As soon as i tried to change the driver settings in my sonar to ASIO my sonar acted a little funny then quickly blue screened me saying windows needed to shut down to protect itself. Damn..Restarted computer and as soon as I open sonar it shut itself down again. Uninstalled both sonar and tascam stuff and figured i'd better research a bit. I figured out that my computer sound card is maybe not up to snuff. Its a soundmax integrated digital audio soundcard if that helps anyone. So maybe this soundcard doesn't support ASIO? I think it supports WDM which i've heard has latency issues when recording. So basically this whole soundcard/ driver thing has me scratching my head. I'm not sure if the software for the Tascam was supposed to download my ASIO drivers or if it tried to but my current soundcard couldn't support it. Maybe I should buy a new soundcard that would be badass for recording.(I do have an extra PCI slot). Not sure what I should do.

While it's possible that your old soundcard is conflicting with your US-122 for all practical purposes, your US-122 is your soundcard now and the old one shouldn't be a factor. I disable my computer's integrated soundcard in the BIOS to avoid the problem from the start.

This leads us to the Tascam problem. Definitely download the lastest drivers from Tascam and install them as instructed. The problems could be just about anything at this point from a dirty operating system to a chipset conflict to an incompatibility.

Thanks Brandon..Think I'm gonna scrap the outdated Tascam usb 1 and go the pci card route or at least get something running on usb 2. That was a helpful bit of info about the tascam becoming the driver. I've been a bit confused as to the relationship of the built in pc soundcard and the tascam drivers.
