Im sitting on Windows 7 release candidate for quite a while now. As microsoft ws giving out a free license number valid till some time next year, i thought, why not give it a try. So far i have nothing bad to say aout it. Even with full graphics it still boots up and shuts down faster than XP professional did. Now i have sorrt of "tweaked" it for audio, cut all the graphics crap and it really runs smooth. I was worried about the drivers at first... But my Lexicon Alph installed and ran nice with the old XP drivers, and now i have Edirol M-16DX with Vista drivers running just as smooth. I am running a Cubase SX3 - no major problems. There is just one small bug though... whenever the inputs are idle (not recording and nothing's connected) the meter still shows some signal on them. But tr to record - nothing. It seems not to affect the recording in any way, so i quess its ust a minor glitch tht can be ignored

I don't know about the installation, since i did a clean installation on a new hdd (the old bastard died on me). Welcome to Windows 7 <- there you can get a free release candidate (the same one am using). Try it out and see if it works for you

I have done some work with Windows 7 32 bit, and its been great. More efficient than XP. I've just installed Windows 7 64 bit on my brand new machine, and not so good. Not efficiency, but compatibility with my sound card and 32 bit plugins. I'm running Cubase 5 which should be able to handle 32 bit plugins in a 64 bit environment but it really can't. Yet. Also, my Saffire drivers don't really work so well in Windows 7 yet. Since I have hundreds of gigabytes of samples to install, I really need to make a decision, and for now that decision is to run Vista 64 bit with Cubase 32 bit. It's working well so far, though its early days. It means I don't get to take advantage of the 9Gb's of RAM I have installed (though since I'm running it in Vista 64 I assume I can use 4Gb just for Cubase???), but it sure is good to see the processor so unbelievably untaxed even when using processor intensive plugins like Reverence and Guitar Rig. Microsoft will be ceasing availability of the Windows 7 RC on 20 August, so if you think you might like to try it, download it now. License keys will still be available for a good while... well, you can read up all about the relative dates here - Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC): Instructions for Free Download It's surprising to see the resistance of developers to 64 bit computing. Even though its really only just starting to rear its head publicly, its been around for a long time now, and the benefits in certain high power environments is obvious. They should have been pushing it rather than holding back. Glad to see computer manufacturers pushing it. |

".........It's surprising to see the resistance of developers to 64 bit computing". Ha ! I don't see that as any surprise. Workstation type computing has it's own little niche compared to consumer computing. 64-bit is pretty old.
