Default Recording Problems

Okay. I am trying to record my vocals over an instrumental. The recordings of my vocals are fine, BUT, the instrumental is also being recorded along with my vocals. How do I get it to only record my vocals? This is happening in Adobe Audition 3.0 and Audacity also. I have my microphone set up in Mic In (Line In), and my headphones are plugged into the Realtek HD Audio Output on my computer. I also have ASIO4ALL installed on my computer, I don't really know what that is for, it was installed along with FL Studio.

I'm not all technical in this department. I just would like to know is there a way that I can get my vocals to record in the track by itself instead of the beat being recording along with my vocals.

I've tried this before a long time ago and it worked but I just don't know how to get it working again.

Can anyone tell me what I can do to achieve this? Am I suppose to check a setting in Adobe Audition? I'm just a bit confused. Thanks in advance for any help.

Is your stock soundcard full duplex? Some of them have a little control panel thingy that will allow you to click on some button so the signal of the pre-recorded music does not combine with your vocal coming in.

Get into the recording section of your sound card (go through the Control Panel), Deselect for recording except the mic input.
