Default Mystified by a few basics. Like sorting files.

I ought to lurk awhile longer. But let me compliment you all for helpfulness and clear writing from what I've seen so far.
Probably unlike many Audition users I am primarily interested in lightly processing shellac 78 rpm recordings for a weekly radio show. In seven or eight months of working with Audition's restoration features I have learned to use an exceedingly light touch. Suggestions from more experienced users are few and far between and would be welcome. Some colleagues of mine do a very impressive job with early editions of Audition but it's hard to figure how. Audition sure isn't Cedar!

I carry the converted recordings to the studio on CD. There we do the show live. Later I edit it in Peak for a nationally distributed version.

Right now I would be happy if I could SORT my files by recency. Possible? There are a lot of them piling up. And I should do something about that. I'm bad at housekeeping: Ask my Millie.

I'd also like to have explained why the system creates TWO files, one of which is mysteriously inaccessible. If anyone answers these simple questions, rest assured I have more. Thanks in advance.

Hey there. Welcome to the forums.

Im uncertain what you mean when you say

Which files do you want to sort? The files on your computer? The files on the cd?

Audition/Cool Edit creates .PK files which are known as Peak Files. Peak files store data associated with the graphical representation of audio data (i.e., Waveform diagram). Audition/Cool Edit has the option to disable the creation of these files, however this may slow loading, saving and re-drawing of graphical data. These files can safely be deleted and will not effect the original audio data in any way.

Thanks for your kind reply. I want to sort the files in the computer, i.e. in the folder, by recency. For example, I might need to find a group of the most recent six or seven recordings that I've worked on. I might want to toss them on a CD for quick evaluation. Typically I might have neglected to jot down the file names or might have worked on them over a span of many days.

Frankly I'm not sure I understood your answer to the other part of my question. There's a big terminology gap. / Mike WDUQ Pittsburgh

The files are stored in a random order on your computer and it's up to the display window to sort the files visually.

When you open a folder of audio files, Windows knows its a folder of audio files. It lists them with a bunch of information that it thinks you'll find useful. Often, it doesn't list the date created or modified.

Go to File > View and makes sure that DETAILS has a little dot next to it. IF it doesn't, click Details so that it does.

Next, in your main window, you'll now see headings, like Name, Size, Type etc. Right click up in that heading area, and find Date Modified. Click on it so that your folder will show the date modified. Now, just click on the date modified heading, and your files will sort themselves in order of date modified. You can click again and it will reverse the order.

It would probably be a good idea to name your files sensibly, then there's no hunting around.

Gentlefolk, thanks. When I get home in a few hours I will try richibee's recipe for sorting. Don't see why I couldn't fumble through those moves before. Thank you R for taking the trouble to spell them out. As for your other admonition, I accept it too, humbly, gratefully and generally.

Folks that Richiebee is a comer. Thanks; just kept rummaging around along the lines you suggested. Eventually your plan worked like a charm. Thank you very much.
Tonight dubbed and sorted a bunch of records...a fellow has lent a literal album of 78s that must be processed fast so that he can come on the show and talk about the local 1940s Pittsburgh artists who recorded them. I don't think this will play in Peoria but some local people will smile. Please expect more questions from here. How bout a nice hand for RB.

one thing you can do but i dont know if it will help you is to open the containg folder song_recorded and open the session then with the session open select all in windows folder view and hit delete, it will delete all not used files and then you have it cleaned up.

Yes, that probably would be quite effective. Thank you!
