No need for stereo there, simple mono narration should be fine.

Here's the problem:

I am recording books to cd. One voice that's it. I am trying to shorten the files (chapters) so that I can limit the number of cds needed, hence less expense. We were thinking at the beginning of the project that 2 cds would suffice..now it's looking like 4 cds per book . Is there a way to shorten a file without sacrificing quality? I'm new at this and I'm a little overwhelmed..waaaa!

many thanks

Well, in order for playback on a standard CD player you will have to stick with 16 bit 44.1k sample rates. They might just be as small as you can make them.

Will these be played on a computer or just a standard audio CD player?

This is important because with MP3's you can make a much smaller sized file.

Yes, standard cd players..tried to convince the boss to go mp3, but he wants cds.
These are books to audio on cds. Trying to use as few cds as possible. Cost conscious I guess....

Thanks for the input...

In that case you're stuck at 44.1KHz, 16-bit, stereo. The only way to lower the number of CDs is to talk faster on the recording.
