Default Garbled audio - what's going on here?

Based on the audio clip I have attached, can anybody tell me what my issue was? This was done using a Fast Track Pro going into my laptop. The issue was intermittent, but occurred more than 50% of the time. Unfortunately, I was playing in the band, so I couldn't monitor the recording as it went down.

It sounds like a clocking error, possibly a bad AD converter

Thanks for the response! Any chance that a mismatch in sample rate could create that noise? I had the double whammy of using Audition 3 downloaded that day with no chance to test drive, and the Fast Track Pro out of the box, same scenario.

Yes, it does sound like that, but it starts off sounding okay and then getting worse over time, suggesting clock out of sync.
