I think Toontrack's Superior Drummer 2.0 is the best for the buck. Basically, if you can afford it, get this instead of Toontrack's EZ Drummer. It is not much more expensive, and it works with its own expansion packs as well as all of EZ Drummer's expansion packs. It's way cheaper than BFD 2 and does just as much. And, its mixer capabilities are far superior (pardon the pun) to that of BFD 2, its closest competitor.

Good Luck,

Reason is a nice software. It includes ReDrum (a drum machine), for building your own beats, you can do that with your midi controller wich sometimes makes it a lot easier. There are good refills for Reason out there with really cool sounding drums.

Another great thing about Reason is that you have DrRex, a device on which you can import a drum sample created within Recycle. To be a little more explicit, you take the drum sample (e.g. a wave file containing a drum loop), put into Recycle (you can search YouTube, there are lots of videos regarding this) save it as DrRex file and bring it into Reason. You can then use the kick, snare or hihats or whatever sound from your imported drum loop and build your own groovy beat.

As I said before, YouTube has become a great site to see how stuff work, you can search for ReDrum, DrRex, Recycle to get an idea on this.
