On the up side it is a pretty colourful interface

But seriously and at the risk of hijacking this informative thread

I wrote the DAW project exchange application called AATranslator and I've had a few requests to provide a function to import/export Sonar project files.

I need a Sonar project file (or 2) which has say 3 tracks, 2 audio files, 4 clips & a screen dump (I don't actually need the audio files sent to me).
Also need the timeline in samples rather than beats/bars etc.

Any chance ? OK I'll take back (most) of what I said about the interface

I'm still thinking of switching to Nuendo for the awesome hi-tech GUI. I can't wait to hear how much cleaner my tracks are going to be. Imagine how precise the plug-ins will function in such an environment!

I think the Nuendo interface is bit more of a gooey rather than a gui

But I think if you pay the premium price it comes in a nice cardboard box which is accoustically designed for putting your monitors on - I think its a con myself - they just want you to buy 2 copies

Don't get me wrong if your game is banging out a few midi tunes then sure knock yourself out with the likes of Sonar, Cakewalk etal but if you are talking about serious recording 24+tracks at once full on studio style then you need to leave the toys & glossy magazine baubels aside and use a serious audio recording, mixing & editing tool like Audition.
I'm not talking about the polished graphics of the interface (I do prefer Sonar's graphics over Audition's however). I'm actually referring to the GUI work-flow intuitivity(-ness?). Maybe I'm a bit twisted, but it works great for me. I do use Sonar's exquisite MIDI capabilities, but I'm also very much into "serious audio recording." Generally, modern day recording, whether you like it or not, involves tons of use for MIDI. Audtion is an ok application if you need a little more bang for the buck than the rest of us, but its rather clunky multitake-recording leaves a lot to be desired, especially when compared to other programs of the like. It could use a few more "once-overs" by the development team as well, since there's this peculiar redundancy in the choice of DSP effects. Also, MIDI use is quite limited to the point of being laughable () within Audition, so that explains your trivializing of MIDI users as 'unserious recording people.' One more thing, the audio side of Audition is quite nice and done very well, I might add. But, it doesn't do anything that can't be done beautifully within Sonar, Cubase, and the many other quality DAW suites/packages. This is, in fact, quite the comedic thread. So, let's have your fanboyish rebuttle!

Sorry I really wasn't taking this thread seriously.

Look it really is each to his own and lets all be thankful that we have choices - unlike those poor fools locked into PT.

You are right I use very little midi and when I do I use Cubase - not that I'm a fan but it does the job.

It's interesting that you refer to the multitake-recording as clunky - I can't think why? Simple and works without a hitch and you have EVERY take!
So when the guitarist says 'how about we go back to take 67 - I think that was the best one' - its there.

But as far as audio goes and the ingenious math they use to get 33 bits out of a 32bit word their restoration functionality really is second to none.

But luckily we have choices - its just that some make better choices than others

10 pounds of shit in a 5-pound bag?

Is a 32-bit word equal to 256 bits? I thought a "word" was 8-bits.

As I recall 8 bits is a byte - you might be thinking of a munch or a nibble perhaps?

Not really sure that I could - its was explained to me once by someone on the 'inside' and it made perfect sense but I doubt if I could explain it to someone else but is apparently at the heart of why if you stay in 32 bit format you can do most anything to the audio file without comprimising it.

But look thats enough about me - lets talk about you - what do you thing of me?

I see...you are referring to 32 bit floating point process. A floating point number is stored in a computer as a string of numbers, with the position of the decimal in that string of numbers next to it...it adapts itself and the noise floor follows the audio.
What do I thing of you?
Let's just say I'll thing of you as "JP33"
