Default Adobe Audition 2.0 Optimization

Hi guys,

I use Adobe Audition 2.0 to do some home recording that consists of guitars, vocals, keys, and drum samples, which I do via a M-Audio MobilPre USB interface.

Several months ago, I purchased a new laptop, a Dell XPS Inspiron 1330., which runs Vista Ultimate. It has a 1.67 GHz processor and 2 GB of RAM. It's performance is much better than my previous desktop, but I still experience lag on playback once I begin adding effects to a handful or more than 3 or 4 tracks.

Would upgrading to 3 or 4 GB of RAM eliminate a lot of this lag, or would it not make that much of a difference? Also, if the additional
RAM would help, would there be a vast difference between 3 and 4 GB?

Thanks for your feedback.

Tony

I think its a CPU problem, 1.67 aint much, so probably extra ram is going to have zero effect on the lag

I recommend you switch to cubase/nuendo/sonar and use the freeze function, so you free some CPU

Yes it would but, Get RAM with the lowest latency possible or make sure it is the same RAM you have now or replace it also. This problem you are having is caused my high latency...(the time it takes the sound to get from source to tape) your hard drive in this case. There is Memory that is Big but still slow. EX: If you have say 2 GB of RAM this is how Big or the capacity if the RAM. If it is say DDR2 533 (PC2 4200) it of course is going to be slower than 1 GB of DDR2 800 (PC2 6400). And again you want to look at Cas Latency. Now on a laptop the hard drives aren't as fast as on a desktop. You get about 5.5 milliseconds of latency from an ATA 6 5400 RPM Laptop Hard drive with 8 MG Cache.... about 4.5 ms with a SATA 8MG 7200 1.5 GB/s and 4.17 ms with a SATA 8MG 7200 3.0 GB/s This is the same as a desktop latency But is you want fast you go with SCSI with 15000 RPM at Average Latency 2ms. I am sorry but laptops are not as fast on an average as a desktop. Akot comes into play. I strongly believe if you want fast in a laptop you must have to Turion Hyper Transports: 1600MHz processor. This kicks ass on write speed. I watched a whole album of Music get transfered from an external hard drive onto the Laptop without seeing the file transfer Gif pop up at all! It was instant! a whole album at the snap of your fingers! This of course is a $1600 laptop. this can be done with a desktop alot cheeper. Also I don't know why but try running defrag often with a laptop. And also most laptops are way slower when they aren't plugged in (running on batteries). I hope all this helps...
