Guitar Mic/DI Layering Example with 5150

This is my Modded 5150II with a weber attenuator at very low volumes. For this recording 2 microphones and a Sansamp BassDriver were utlized. A Sennheiser e906 dynamic was used on the left side of my 12 inch Hellatone 60L halfway between the cone and outer rim of the speaker, pointed at around 30 degrees towards the cone. On the right side, a AKG Perception 150 lg diaphragm condenser through a Presonus tubepre pointed 30 degrees towards the cone. Lastly a Sansamp Bass Driver DI took a line out from the attenuator and was run into the board. Guitars are doubletracked and hard panned. High pass at 100 and slight mid cut at 452.

The music is a tiny poorly thrown together riff from Opeths "Deliverance"

You will be hearing in the following order:

1. condenser
2. dynamic
3. DI
4. dynamic
5. condenser and dynamic
6. condenser dynamic and DI
7. everything with drums

I don't know, I think the note definition is great, the signals all sum up very well with no phasing. Faders are at 0. I finally shot for a mutli mic setup (since the last time i did this I failed, miserably) and I think the results are pretty darn good. I'm going to be recording an actual song soon with this setup, but I was wondering what everyone thought of the sound and hopefully some people will like it enough to use a similar micing technique.

I wish you would have evened the levels up on all of them. That would have made this user submitted clip usable.

I would have preferred to hear all individual clips with drums and bass. This would make this little user submitted clip very usable.

You are right. You can hear all notes very clearly. However, I'm not really sure what genre of tone this fits into. I can't tell if it's unique or weird (or both).

What does it sound like? It just reminds me of a really thick, mid heavy guitar tone. I could cut 400hz like its no one's business and it would get really "metal-y." The song that this riff is from is a death metal song. I could redo the test one day so you'll have a more usable piece of audio.

Does this really work for you? I've found that EQ is a terrible way of making tonal changes. (Tonal changes as in the difference between a Les Paul and a Strat or in the difference between a Fender and Marshall).

When I scoop 400hz on this mix, it just sounds slightly low-mid scooped. Nothing more, nothing less. If you listen to the guitars are on the actual album, you can pretty much tell they were "eq'd." At least I hear some air of syntheticness in the tone. They were recording using 5150's and Laney's according to the band, so who knows.
