It's only $20, and it's a quality mp3 encoder. Still not worth it when I can use the same encoder for free with another program.

What's more fucked about Pro Tools is requiring a Digi interface. You can buy an mbox2 (2x2, 48K) for $450 or an presonus firestudio (8x8, 96K) for $500 and use it with cubase, logic, dp, ableton, etc. Admittedly, the mbox2 comes with whatever version of pro tools is appropriate for that device, while the firestudio only comes with Cubase LE, but this might not be an issue, depending on your moral code of conduct.

And I'm a pro tools guy, haha.

I can somewhat understand their monopoly in that, similar to apple, they know their hardware will work with their software. Period. Their tech support doesn't have to field calls where third-party interfaces are to blame, giving them more time to work with problems that they CAN fix. But it's still a pain in the ass.

The lack of VST support sucks too.

Oh yeah man, for sure... I just can't believe a program such as ProTools doesn't include and MP3 encoder..Piss poor I think...

Its not like including expensive, inclusive software... Even a child converts Files to MP3s on a daily basis by using 'Joe Public' apps such as ITunes etc...

Anyway, can I ask, why do you want to save your vocal takes into MP3 format anyway...(Just being nosey haha)

That doesn't really bother me all that much because like you said, you can do it in all kinds of free software. It's kind of stupid that they don't include it for free, yeah, but it's not a big enough deal to me to get a wedgie over.

It wasn't me that started this thread, haha. In fact, I haven't seen the guy since the thread started.

[EDIT]: Now that I think about it, he probably wants to email them to someone, and the wavs are too large to do so. Total guess, though.

Wow, I wasn't back in this forum because I thought no one replied to this thread. I checked for 3 days, and no replies, so I gave up. Haha.

And yes, you are right, I want to email them to someone. So I guess wav's quality is better than mp3's quality? Am I right to say that?

Absolutely. mp3 uses what's known as lossy compression. This means it achieves a smaller filesize (usually around 25%) partially by discarding bits of data. Different encoders use different algorithms to make the "artifacts" caused by this missing data as transparent as possible, but anyone with a clinical ear and good monitoring situation can hear the difference if they A/B them. To a highly trained ear, mp3s sound like horse shit.
