Default RME FF800 to DIGI 003r

i have an RME FF800 and im thinking of selling it and geting a digi 003 to run protools. but is the 003 compatible with other DAWs?
the RME works great, never had a problem with a thing, but for an $1800 interface, my dry recordings still sound digital/thin. whats can the problem be? isnt RME suppose to be up there with apogee?

i have u87/avalon 737/rme/ fl studio 9/cubase 4
2.8ghz dual core, 7 gb ram, vista

I have a ff800 and like it pretty well. I think that the digital/thin sound is something that yr stuck with until you learn how to compensate.

I was under the impression that the ff800 worked with protools/mac.

I think the big selling point on the rme is the clock. Said to be very steady. Obviosly the routing capabilities and conversion is supposed to be above average. And as Brandon discusses, theyre may not be much of a sound difference between a $400 interface and a $2500 interface. I didnt notice a big one when stepping up from the firepod. Good luck brother i hope you fiond what yr lookin for.

can you clarify what you mean by compensate? whats the DAW you use with your RME? cubase? do you record vocals? if you do, i would highly appreciate it if you send me a short (dry) acapella/sample. thanks a lot

Compensate meaning dont cut as many lower mids/upper bass. Try to leave yr sounds a bit w a r m e r than usual.

I use nuendo and i will gladly record you a vocal clip with in the next 3 1/2 hours.Semi busy at the moment. Oh any mic preferences or specifics?

Ok this is a quicky to get you goin. Didnt even use a pop filter. I used the bass roll off so its not very bassy but more where i might choose to use it. If theres anything else i can do just say it. Im getting freed up here very shortly.

Well with two diff gender at two diff volumes in two diff keys its a bit tough to tell but it seems to me that the female voices mic MIGHT be a bit better in the highs. The male vox seem to have more mids.

i tested the 003 and its sound pretty close to the RME. you were right about the highs, the girls vocal was recorded on a RME multiface but wasnt comletely (dry). it was actually EQed on an avalon737 with a boost at 32k for presence. im gettin a much closer sound now but not 100% yet. do you think the RME mutiface is more acurate or less digital sounding than the rme fireface 800? or do you think it can be a different in the singer? or both?

IMHO and im sure you'll end up with plenty of others, There can be a bajillion different factors.

It has been discussed by many who know more than I, but i just dont see how there can be a sound difference between two interfaces of nearly the same price. And it has been discussed that there probably isnt a big difference between a $400 one and a $1200 job. Im not sayin that Im 100 percent correct, I just know that in my experience, theres not a big enough dif between my presonus firepod and ff800 for me to worked up over.

Id wait and see what some others think and go from there. Im sure one of these guys has been in yr shoes. Good luck I wish i could help more.
