Problem with highlighting a section

This is getting weird, last night I had a problem with audiosuite plugins not processing and it turns out that "use in playlist" magically unclicked....

onto this problem, I need to clean up some vocal tracks and I went to highlight some sections on the track to cut, etc... and it doesn't highlight, it shows at the top that I'm highlighting but the track itself isn't blackened out..

Any clue why?

I'm new to recording and this forum and I would like to say I have not had this much fun doing anything in my life. I was built for recording and everything I have ever done throughout my life has somehow lead me back to music. Hope to make a few friends here to help guide me through my musical journey. (Did that just sound as lame as I think it did?)

Edit: I'm using PT 6.4 - Windows XP. Not sure what else you would need to know, like I said, I'm really new to all of this.

Are you trying to select the region by clicking and dragging across the timeline at the top, or by clicking and dragging across the track itself?
