Somebody please help! I've already moved sessions from drives, changed drives, and used different firewire ports. I know that I need to upgrade my ram but shit! It doesn't even play 3 tracks!
That really isn't enough RAM (in my opinion), especially if you're running Vista. A move to XP would improve your performance immensely.

Also, when I was having the buffer underrun whatever errors, Disabling my network card fixed all my problems. Doesn't mean it will for you, but it might help.

Sorry Josh, I probably posted in the wrong place. I'm running on OSX Leapord not Windows Vista. 1.5 Gb should be enough ram to play 3 tracks

I should have realized that when you said you were using a G5. And instinctively, I would think that 1.5 would be enough RAM for that in OS X (Though that's really more of just a halfway-educated guess than anything).

One thing I ran across is that PT8 is only officially compatible with OS X 10.5.5 or 10.5.6. Could that be causing problems?

You aren't using a kensington mouse perchance?

Not sure of the brand of mouse I'm using. I think its a regular old apple wireless mouse. Could this be a problem?

Nope. Just kensington trackballs are causing problems like your description.

Thanks for those notes audiogeek, I have been recording to my C drive and get the ol' buffer error on my laptop but rarely ever happens on my desktop.
I usually don't have any issues when recording from my midi controller, all hell breaks lose when I plug in the guitar. So I just copy the project files on to a jump drive and finish up on my desktop, drums and bass take me forever and I like to sit back in the recliner to do that. lol

a few things I can think of.

1- only one drive in your PC? You need 2 for pro tools
2 - Drive speed should be 7200rpm
3- Firewire card should be using a Texas Instruments chip.

HUI is the protocol for the control surface functions of your interface.

In peripherals it should be set to Motormix, 1-8 input, 1-8 output.

If it's losing connection it could be caused by IRQ sharing.
