Question Non Pro-tools cards??

So i've used m-box for a few years now and have had my fun with it. now i want to broaded my horizon to (heaven forbid!!!) more than 2 imputs.

i bought a digi 001 for cheap but of course the corrisponding softwear is a little too outdated to be useful to me........oh well..

i've been locked up with the m-box so long i havent even looked for other options. I know because of their reputation as "industry standard" digidesign has been called industry nazis (by people i know), but i figure i'd ask to see if anyone has had experience in this:

if i bought a soundcard not associated digidesign at all (Alesis, Presonus, what have you) would protools even recognize it?

I don't know the answer to that but I think these guys would:

As a guy who has been using protools LE for a little under a year now (my first introduction to recording) I'm going the oher way (keeping my 002 hardware because it suits my needs just fine) but long term I think I'll end up on different software because I don't like the fact that the digi software forces you to have the hardware plugged in at all times in order to launch the program (except for that though I think their PTLE software is great).

If you want to stick with PTLE because you like the software, and don't care about being a revision behind on the hardware, you can pick up 002 rack units pretty cheap now that the 003 is out. I like my 002, and don't really see upgrading to the 003 any time soon since the 002 is good enough for what I'm doing. Actually, the 002 is good enough for what most people are doing. The fact that you can pick them up pretty cheap now is a good deal I think. If you can get the seller to transfer the ownership properly you should be able to get caught up to version 7.4 of the software pretty inexpensively. I use 7.3 and I think they want $50 to go to 7.4. Personally I doubt that I'll do it but if you plan to stick with PTLE software, that is a very inexpensive upgrade path.
