If you already know how to use a Compressor and EQ then just read the manual and that should fill in the blanks.

You should have saved money and stuck with the stock Digi plug-ins until you know how to use an eq effectively.

Just because you've spent money on URS doesn't mean your mix will sound better. Practice using the tools you have, and when you're an expert with those, then its maybe time to advance.

It's good advice. Also, after you've grown comfortable with an EQ, you'll be able to appreciate the difference, and feel more confident in your purchase.

Ok, well, I'm doing nothing better, so I'll walk you through this.

You say you're familiar with a graphic EQ. Pull up EQIII-7 band on a track. See the window with the line going across it? Imagine the faders from a graphic eq superimposed on top of that. Now grab one of the colored dots in the middle, think of it as a fader, and pull it up. You'll see that the faders around it move up a little too. How many of these move, and how much they move is controlled by the Q knob. If you turn the Q knob for the control point you were using, you'll see the shape of the curve change. What you're changing is the "bandwidth." The higher the bandwidth, the more of the surrounding frequencies are being effected. As you probably guessed, the frequency knob changes the center frequency, and the gain knob controls how much you're boosting or cutting.
This type of EQ is called a parametric EQ. the 7-band EQIII has five of these. It's also got shelving or cutoff filters for the high end and low end. Just play with these. One you understand the parametric EQ, they'll be obvious.

Did that help at all, or did you know all of this already?

If you know how to use EQIII you know how to use URS. It's the same concept (an EQ) just in a different graphical layout (no pretty picture to help) so you'll have to learn to use your ears I'm afraid.
