Default Can you mix without mbox attached

Hello everyone,
I just got a macbook pro (4 gig RAM and 500 gig hd) and I'm almost certain to get protools with mbox 2.
I have a naive question - will I be able to do mixes on the macbook without the mbox 2 interface attached?

No, you can't even open Pro Tools without their hardware attached.

If you'd like to be able to use pro tools on the go without having to lug a bulky-ish interface around with you, the mbox 2 micro is more or less a pro tools dongle with d/a converters and a headphone jack.

Personally, I'd just save the money. The mbox 2 isn't that terribly cumbersome.

For field or remote recordings, I use an Mbox 2. Sure the Micro is easier to throw in the gig bag but too limited for what I want to do. DrGamble is 100% right about opening Pro Tools without your hardware attached. Once the software sees that it can not communicate with the Mbox, it's No Dice from there Brother. Sorry.

Thanks for the insights folks - now that I think of it- the mbox 2 isn't so much of a pain to carry around.
