Default 003 rack & presonus digimax sync problem!

hey there,
i have just bought a 003 rack and presonus digimax FS pre amp, connected them up via the out on the digimax and the in on the 003 via lightpipe, and also hooked up the word clock via BNC using the 003 as master so word clock out of 003 and in on the digimax then setting the digimas to external clock running at 88.2. then following steps in protools to sync them together(setting the sp/dif to optical etc) but i cant seem to get protools to show all the inputs for the digimax! i go into the inputs menu and it only comes up with sp/dif at the bottom and even expanding that it still doesnt show the other 8inputs, neither when selecting an input source on a track it still only shows one sp/dif input and thats it, am i doing something wrong or missing something? i just want to be able to assighn a single input from the digimax to a track in protools but cant figure out how! any help would be so much appreciated!

thanks guys!
Hayden

I run the exact same hardware. I did not hook anything up onto the BNC connectors, the word clock syncs through the ADAT lightpipe as far as I know.

Heck, I didn't make any configuration changes at all and it just worked. In the Protools hardware setup screen my optical format is set to ADAT and my clock source is set to Internal. My sample rate is at 48kHz.

Try those settings and get rid of the BNC sync cable.

hey ferguson! thankyou so much for your reply..
i tried that but still no luck, what i was able to do tho is set the digimax as the clock master (disconnecting the bnc cable) and setting the internal clock to 44.1 like you said but the only difference is the master is not the 003 like in your case (not sure why it wont work for me) and now the 'ADAT' sync led on the 003 is lit so i know they are connected, but the channels in protools still arent there! ive been to the I/O menu and still only the 8channels on the 003 and sp/dif left and right, i also had a look at the select input on a track and same thing- the 8inputs on the digimax arent there!
one thing i was thinking if you could clarify for me- i only have one optical cable going from the out of the digimax to the in of the 003 (this is what i was told by my dealer) so im wandering if i need a second one from the out of the 003 to the in of the digimax aswell to complete the sync? and this might be why the inputs arent appearing? but yes if you could send me some screen printouts of your hardware config that would be great! mite be something im missing?, thankyou for your help again hope to hear from you soon

First off, my gut says you won't be able to send 8 channels at 88.2 via a single Lightpipe connection. I could be wrong about that, but I know that ADAT does have a limited bandwidth.

A dude was discussing this problem the other day. He said that with one of his Digidesign boxes he was told to go ahead and hook the output of the Digidesign box to the input of the ADAT box. He was told this would sync it up. This sounds unnecessary to me, but that's how I feel about most of what I read about the Digidesign stuff.

ADAT supports eight channels of digital audio at sample rates of 44.1k and 48k.

I have two optical cables connected, in to out and out to in. Not sure if both are necessary but it works so I'm not touching it

Here are some screenshots of my configuration. Notice that I have all 8 inputs configures on my Digimax. Inputs 1&2 are a stereo pair and imputs 3-8 are mono.

guys-
thankyou so much for your help, i got it going just then! the screen prints helped heaps ferguson so thanks a bunch for that, my settings for the hardware tab were pretty much the same (exept the sample rate) im running 44.1 at the moment. but it was the I/O tab that was the problem, i didnt set it up the same as you but the reason it wasnt recognozing the channels is because it was like it wasnt updating the channel listing when the peripherals were synced, so all i did was hit the default button and bam there they were, then i tried patching an input to a track in protools and all 8 mono adat inputs were there! so im wrapped now thanks heaps! weird how just because of that little thing (all of my gear is brand new and i never changed those settings beforehand so all along i was assuming it was already set to default) i would have thought it would aoutomatically update its I/O settings when a new sync was established, but obviously not! and yeah still just running the one optical cable (wasnt gunna buy another one till i tried everythin else first) so ferguson if in return i could give you anything from my expierience that is it, if u ever need an optical cable for anything you know you have a spare!! thanks again mate and to you brandon! this site is great for people like me its helped me out heaps and hopefully when i get more experienced i can help others too, ill be stickin around..

Glad to see you got that one figured out. I struggled for 6 months or so becuse the guy at Guitar Center originally sold my wife (this was a present to me) a Presonus Firestudio instead of a Digimax. After 6 months of trying to make the damn thing work someone finally told me that the Firestudio will not work with the 003 rack. So I know how you feel when it finally starts working.

You can pay me back by making some killer recordings and posting up for us to listen. I am hoping to put the finishing touches on my studio this weekend so I can get back to recording.

will do mate, my band were supposed to record last weekend but cause i couldnt get the digimax workin i couldnt lay the drum tracks down! but i did still set up the drum room n all the mics n ran them thru a standard mixer to see how my mics and placement sounded and its soundin pretty good so hopefully when i get em thru protools n get some effects on there (which is my next learning curve) should sound great!!
you can check us out if you like MySpace.com - Distorted Vision - AU - Metal - www.myspace.com/distortedvisionmusic were tryin to get some tracks down to put up on our myspace but u can still see what were all about.
yeah i remember you sayin about the firestudio in a post a while back when i was inquiring about the octopre with the 003rack, what a pain in the ass huh? ah well its the thought that counts and its amazing how many pricks there are out there that sell the wrong shit to people that dont know any better (itl be cause the firestudio was more expensive i bet!)
thanks again mate- H
