Default Sonar LE Newbie saying hi and some questions

Hi All,

Im new here and new to home recording. I Bought the Edirol UA-25EX and comes with Sonar LE. My first attemt at recording bass came out terrible, cracks and pops. Anyway I think it is because I had to change it in the software settings to point at the audio device rathen that sound card. I also increase the buffer size and next go worked great.

I then tried my TD-3 drumkit and worked like magic. I am working my way through the tutorials, but smoe things are not so clear.

IN a track, if I want to add an effect to a section of that track, so 10 seconds in the middle......I couldn't find how to do that...... it was effect all the way through or not at all.......

Ant the other one which I am sure I will find eventually, but while Im here

how do i remove the empty space at the begining and end of the track, i have well over 30 seconds on each side, would liketo have maybe 5.

And when I click the metronome, I can hear it?

Sorry if these are dumb, but Im a real noob. And working this out on my own.

I am just recording by own instruments, bass, drums guitar etc

Thanks for any tips

You can create an effect for a track or a clip. If the clip is in the middle of a project, go to it, highlight it, right click it and choose the option to create an effect envelope. That should help.

Highlight the space you want to remove ( if the space effects all tracks you have to highlight all tracks), go to edit, delete, delete hole.

Not sure what your question is regarding the metronome.

Welcome aboard! There's nothing like smoke testing as part of the learning process. Keep turning the knobs!

What I sometimes do is clone the track (i.e., right click on the track and select "Clone Track"). This will give you another track that is the exact duplicate. You can now remove everything but that 10 second part and add as many effects you desire (until your CPU starts barking at you).

Removing empty space is easy. Go to the beginning of the wav form in the track, grab the edge, and while holding your left mouse button down, slide your mouse to the left. Note that this does not erase that part of the wav file (you can always drag it back). Same thing for the end. With your mouse cursor, grab the very end of the file, and with the left mouse button down, slide to the left.

It's hard to explain this, but hopefully you'll understand what I'm trying to say.

I'm not sure what you're asking about the metronome. I think you mean you can't hear it. That's because you have to route it to your Edirol output.

Hope this helps. Keep playing around with it.

Thanks Tony and Michael, that helps heaps, Im gonna print this out! I like the idea of the second track for the effects. Yes I meant I couldn't hear the metronome, that was a I will check my metronome setting for output to edirol...i think thats what u mean....

I am reading through the whole 840 pages of the manual, LOL not sure how much will sink in, but between that, playing with all the knobs, doing the tutorials and some help from this group, I am sure I can create something I can be proud of.......

Thank again
Nick

Default Re: Noise Reduction???Quick question how Sonar LE Newbie saying hi and some questions

Ok really getting into this, but one of the Audio options is reduce background noise, however when I select it, it says not supoprrted in this version of Sonar? is that right? Is there a way to remove the background noise?

Also after exporting as a WAV file, when i play it, the volume seems very low, is there a way to make it louder?????

Thanks
Nick

It depends on what kind of background noise. Review your recording chain to be sure you're not inroducing any noise. You'll always have some kind of noise, especially if you're micing a guitar amp.

There are some ways to reduce background noise (i'm assuming your'e talking about hiss). You can try the gates or noise reduction plugins that come with Sonar.

To get your WAV louder, before exporting, put Boost11 on the Master Buss and crank up the input. Have your output set to about -0.1 or -0.2.

Thanks, but that's the thing, when I select "Noise reduction" in Sonar it gives me some message about it not being available, then says do you want to remove all references to noise reduction in sonar??? I always select no, hoping I cna activate it somehow...It is the LE version

The background noise is the hiss nothnig major, but would rather not have it - I am plugging straight into the audio interface. Ill try the Boost 11 for a louder recording.

Oh yeah, I believe LE doesn't come with noise reduction. Go over to the "Free Plugins" thread on this forum. There are some good free plugs that may help you.

Ah, had a look but not sure where to find such, not sure what Im even looking for. With that said, I am going to use the noise reduction function in Audacity - do you see any issues with this approach? Seems the easiest for me anyway....
