Default its not been a cakewalk (audio problem)

Hi all,
i have recently purchased sonar 8 producer and am having trouble with the playback. I have a condenser mic in front of my amp which is plugged into my mixer (usb interface attached) then into my computer. I have tested the recorded track in Audacity and it sounds fine, I have also recorded a few tracks with sonar and they sound great. But when i play the multiple tracks back again, or sometimes even the one recorded track plays back with a loud scratchy laggy noise. Ive managed to have about 30 seconds of perfect in sync playback (backing guitar, bass, lead guitar, plugin drums)but then when i come back to play the master mix (in the interim fiddling around with volume settings) i get the annoying out of sync scratchy crap.I have investigated allot of settings but i cannot find the one that stops this from happening. I am sure that it is not any leads or ports doing this because i have checked my monitors and other playback devices on another system. If you could direct me to a tutorial that shows how to go through the settings and set sonar up properly or if you could suggest a way of stopping this annoyance it would be greatly appreciated. i have tried to look for an answer but all i get is BUY THIS,BUY THAT webpages.

1st i would try a different driver, If your not using ASIO than try it 1st. If that doesnot do it then i would try upping the buffers in Sonar. Goto options and audio. There you will find the above items I talked about.
