Default Input Monitoring

I need help. I'm using sonar 8 to record. When I go to track a second guitar part the input signal is way too loud and I can't hear the other track. If I turn down the input signal the recording level drops too low to record. How do I get a high enough signal to tape while still being able to control it's volume in my headphone mix. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You need to let us know what equipment your using. Is there a mixer in the loop, What audio interface are you using ? Need more info.... I use a Tascam US1641 audio interface. It has monitor outputs and line outs which go to my mixer. I control my balance between what i have recorded and what i'm over dubbing with the Tascam and the mixer...

The easiest way to do this is:

- Take "Track 1" (your previously recorded track) and run it to the MASTER FADER

- Bring the MASTER FADER down somewhere about half way (this doesn't not affect the track you are recording)

- Record "Track 2" (second guitar part) as you would normally do. (this is not going through the MASTER FADER)

In a nutshell you're usually the MASTER FADER to bring the previously recorded tracks down to the recording level of the track you're recording.

Another way, is to use an external mixer, whether hardware or software (i.e., CueMix).

But the process I mentioned above should work for you.

I think his problem is that the track that he is currently recording is hotter than the previously recorded tracks.

I'm wondering if he has a routing problem and is hearing his direct monitoring on the same bus as his daw, resulting in a boosted signal.

You may be right, but tI recommend checking the MASTER FADER. If it's at unity then there appears to be a problem with the input signal.

Recommend posting a clip so we can be sure.

I'd say put Boost11 on the MASTER FADER to see if the previously recorded tracks can come up in the tracking mix, but then again it won't solve the input problem which we think is going on.

We need to know what recording interface he is using. Reason for this is my Tascam has a monitoring knob that you turn to the left to turn up the input and turn to the right to turn up the computer. I'm sure there are more interfaces out there that do the same thing. This might have something to do with it to.....So when you read this please tell us what your sound device is, might be helpful !!! Although he's turning down the the input and loosing his record signal, if the knob i'm talking about is turned to the input side to far his part he's recording would be alot louder and it would be very hard to turn up the computer side of it.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. Tonyb your correct, I needed to adjust the master fader using the software controls for my audiophile 192 soundcard. I got so caught up in using Sonar I forgot about that. Thanks so much again guys.
