Angry help with static in recording

i just started using sonar and everytime i start recording im hearin static and a clipping noise is this due to my soundcard posssibly i have a mxl 990 microphone plugged into my alesis mixboard (The mixboard does not have a usb) and the board goes into my computer soundcard any advice anyone i am also using windows xp as my operating system

It most likely is your soundcard.
The worst of them will pick up noise from hard drives and stuff inside your computer.
Try out the Asio4all, maybe it will help.

Hard to tell if its your sound card, particularly since you don't mention what sound card you are using. If you are using on board sound cards then that can be your issue. Cakewalk specifically says in its literature that Sonar is a professional level program and although you may be able to use on board sound cards, it will function best with professional level sound cards with the appropriate drivers.

Have you used the MXL before? I wouldn't overlook the obvious things like a bad cable. Cables, especially cheap cables are a nightmare for me. Plus, people not used to condensor microphones are often not ready for how much noise they pick up from sources like computer fans, air conditioning vents, wall clocks, etc.
