Default Help Me Someone

I'm new....ZERO in recording.

I'm using (line 6) toneport for recording my guitar in the PC and a cakewalk for the software.

my problems:

1. why there is always humming while recording the guitar part?

2. what is the meaning of " trimming"?

3. my guitar playing is not very good, sometimes out of tempo. My question is how to delete the certain (the out of tempo part) by not deleting the "good part".....

Does it hum when you pull the guitar cable out of your audio interface?

Usually this is an issue with level, but it can also be used in editing to cut off or "trim" off a piece of audio.

This is a sign you haven't read the manual. If the manufacturer can't explain how to use their product better than some random guy on a forum, you may consider finding a new manufacturer.

Has humming been an issue with your guitar before? Often people complain of a hum that disappears when the bridge or pickups are touched - this is because of poor quality shielding or bad ground connection/s. If this hasn't been an issue with your guitar than it could be to do with the gain structure set on your line 6 audio interface. Audio interfaces can produce a lot of artefacts, and generally speaking, high quality interfaces will exhibit less of these noise properties.

If, when monitoring yourself whilst recording, the hum isn't apparent but whilst listening to tracked audio it is, the hum could be caused by your playback device/s. This would be a worst case scenario.

If you go into recording options in sonar and set the recording mode to 'punch in' and then set the punch times (first time represents when it will start recording, second time represents when it will stop) you can record over only a specific period of time (mistakes or whatever else) without messing with what you're happy with. This works best when recordings are set to 'overwrite' rather than 'sound on sound' as when in S-o-s mode, you will end up with two audio clips on the same track in the same place.

Alternatively, you could find the start of a mistake or series of mistakes in the track view and right click on the audio clip. Select the 'Split' option on the right-click menu. this will cut the audio clip in that place on the track. Using this method you can effectively cut out errors or areas where mistakes have been made. Also, by splitting at the beginning and end of a 'good' phrase, you can copy the specific audio clip (right click menu or ctrl-c) and duplicate it to cover an area where a mistake has been made (assuming your music involves repitition.)

Once the errors have been repaired and any distasteful overlaps (audible pops and clicks) crossfaded or treated otherwise, you can select all of the audio clips and right-click to select the 'bounce to clips' (or something like this) option. This will bounce all of your 'Split' audio clips back into a single piece.

Make sure you're recording with a click or at least a tempo to go by.

to re-record a section that you messed up without re-recording the whole part.

Yup. No need to re-record the entire track if there is only one bum note.
