| I recommend contacting the Cakewalk Forum. I've never had success using Cakewalk's mp3 converter anyway. I paid my $19.99 but always get the message that I still don't own it, since Sonar 4. I gave up on it and use Soundforge.

More likely an artifact of overcompression. As an experiment, try reducing compression and lowering the peak value to around -2db and see what effect that has on the muddiness. You have to leave more headroom when the target is MP3, especially when it's a low-bitrate setting. Here's a post I made on the Cakewalk forum about it.
